History

Newport Math and Tutor, or NMAT, was established to help students reach their academic goals.  I have been working with students since 2001 and formally set up an LLC in 2008 as my business has grown.  I find myself fortunate to have helped so many students achieve their dreams. 

Bio

I am a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.  I received my BA in Economics with a Minor in Finance.   

Method

My pencil moves with my kids’.  I don’t like to sit there and watch my kids do all the work.  I am right there, side-by-side, working out these problems with them.  I'm not giving answers away, just the opposite in fact.  I want see my students' work and i want them to see mine.

I find that not many kids like math.  That being the case, I like to bring some humor and humanity into our time together.  This often disarms my students and allows them to, dare I say, start having fun with math.  Once their fear or uncertainty about the material is lessened or removed, I can help my kids better understand how they think and how best they can figure things out.

It is my goal to empower my kids with problem solving skills and confidence that is bigger than just their math homework and our brief time together.  I push my kids to realize their own abilities and to implement them in all of their academic endeavors.  That being the case, I often feel that about half of what I do is math.  The other half I find much more important; enabling my kids to move on past our time together in a posture of confidence and assuredness in all that they do.
